Scar Treatment-Understanding the Scar Characteristics

-->

Scars can be divided into several groups. Each of them requires different treatment protocol, especially if we are dealing with the laser treatment. If we talk about laser treatment, we should understand that the physicians analyze few things such as scar color, texture, and morphology. Some of them will also ask the patient about the previously applied treatments.

Having those understanding, we will be an active subject of the scar treatment.

There are some types of scars which we really need to know. The first type is Hypertrophic scars. It is a raised scar which caused by the overzealous of collagen synthesis which has limited collagen lysis. It causes a thick collagen bundles that consist of fibroblasts and fibrocytes.

The second type is Keloid. If we look at this scar closer we will find that it is raised and red-dish purple. This nodular scar is harder than Hypertrophic scars. Keloid is more likely to appear in patient with darker skin tone. However, we can still find them on other people who do not have the dark skin.

The third type is Atrophic scars. It is caused by collagen destruction during an inflammatory skin disease such as Cystic acne and varicella. As a result of scarring after inflammatory, we will see the atrophic, ice pick, saucerized or boxcar scars.

Those are the basic scar characteristics.
